Introduction to Facilitated Communication

Facilitated communication or supported typing is a means of communication used for individuals with communication impairments. These individuals can communicate by pointing, typing with pictures or using a keyboard. This type of communication occurs with support from a facilitator or trained person who supports students by either giving guiding questions, or by using physical support (hand over hand) to slow or stabilize movements. The facilitator is not making the decisions; rather, they are offering support to help the individual express and interact with the environment around them. Facilitated communication is also at times referred to as facilitated training because the goal is to have the individual be as independent as possible when typing, and to be able to use facilitated communication to accomplish other daily tasks.
